Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan Lawsuit

In addition to the CANA lawsuit, there is a lawsuit aimed at the Chicago police department from the Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan sued the city of Chicago, contending Mayor Rahm Emanuel‘s reforms are not sufficient to prevent the Chicago Police Department from continuing a pattern of deadly and excessive force that disproportionately hurts African-Americans and Latinos.

This lawsuit is based on findings of the Justice Dept. investigation. Policing deficiencies: inadequate training and a lack of supervision to “a failure to investigate misconduct and discipline officers.”

The Grassroots Alliance For Police Accountability

GAPA released its proposal after more than 18 months of community meetings, a process backed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, though said that it isn’t a good idea for a proposed seven-member civilian board to have so much power. Lori Lightfoot agrees with language that would give power over the superintendent and the department policy. Emanuel didn’t say whether he supports the proposed board.

North Side Ald. Harry Osterman, 48th, who will co-sponsor the proposal. will introduce the group’s proposal as an ordinance within the next 30 days.
