On November 29, 2010 the venerable “Better Government Association (BGA)” conducted part one of the “Citizen Watchdog Training” course on Chicago’s West Side, the first time it has been offered in this part of the city. The training focuses on creating citizens who understand government and how to hold officials accountable.
CANA was well represented with members Bill Glass and Ron Reid who was also accompanied by his 15 year old daughter Ashley home for the holidays from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. As a writer and editor for a campus newspaper at Exeter, Ashley’s comments went from “Dad do I have to go” … to … “this was interesting” … the best possible affirmation from a teenager.
The training was conducted by Mary Frances O’Connor, Andy Shaw and Bob Herguth https://indipill.com/. The focus was on the Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). These tools when properly used can form a considerable arsenal in holding our officials and institutions accountable to our needs as citizens and not those of special interests or self serving individuals.
The Next session will be held on Dec 6. and will feature more FOIA training from their veteran team of lawyers and investigative reporters. Please take time to come out for this event. Become the change you want to see. See the below information to sign-up:
