strongly oppose the new public school hours of 9am – 4:15 pm which will impact this upcoming 2015/2016 academic year at Jones College Prep. My daughter will be a freshman this year; she and I have been looking forward to traveling from home to work and school during daylight hours. My daughter is a graduate of Alain Locke Charter School which she attended for 10 years. The hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 8 am – 5 pm and Friday, 8 am – 1pm. It has been my responsibility for those 10 years to pick up my daughter and/or have supplemental transportation and childcare in place to assure my daughter safety home especially during the winter months. I am single parent and I am so grateful for the quality education Alain Locke provided to my child and the hours were a benefit to me being that I do not get off work until 5 pm. Fortunately, the supplemental transportation and childcare services were a help to me; they were also very costly, and are no longer relevant. My daughter and I would not arrive home until after 6 pm every day for 10 years which leaves very little family time on school nights. She had much homework too complete in preparation for the next school day making her bedtime 10 pm – 11pm some nights.

Again, this will be my daughter’s first year of high school and she will be taking the Green Line Train. This also my mode of transportation to and from work, I oppose the new public school hours for these reasons: The Green Line is very congested during Rush Hour which will be the time she will be dismissed from school. If my daughter were to get involved in any extra-curricular activities (which may involve a large majority of students at Jones and other schools), she and other students would not arrive home until 8:00 pm or later. Students will not be able to begin homework until late in the evening leaving them tired during classes as my daughter had been on several occasions. I am concerned for my daughter’s safety during the winter months. I don’t want her first year of high school to be too stressful. She will be faced with new challenges entering a new school with new classes and making new friends. I literally don’t want her travel home to be one of those stress factors! We have endured enough from our 10 years at Alain Locke Charter School. I am reaching out to all who will listen and can revert the hours of Jones College Prep back to 8am – 3:15pm. Thank you.
